Health Insurance

Here is a statistic I found rather shocking. Apparently 13.3 million people between the ages of 19-29 are without any form of health insurance. The worst part about it is that some of them don’t even realize that they are uninsured.

How can that be you ask? Well once students graduate college or even high school (if they don’t plan to attend college in the fall) they no longer qualify for coverage under most of their parent’s health insurance plans.

Moreover, it takes time to find full time employment with an employer that offers full health coverage for many recent graduates. Many former students assume that they will still be covered under their parent’s plan until the new insurance kicks in. However, this is rarely the case.

Basically, once you are done school you are on your own in terms of finding your own health insurance. The good news is that it is entirely possible to get short term health coverage, which if you are still in your 20s, should not cost too much.

Typical premiums are usually between $75-125 a month to those under 30 who are in good health with no preexisting conditions. However, you should be aware that most short term plans limit how long you can hold a policy to 12 months or less.

If you think that it will take longer than 12 months to get full health coverage from an employer, you will probably have to opt for a longer term, full price plan instead. It is always recommended that you maintain coverage, because you never know when a medical problem may arise.
